Games manufacturer boosts server and workstation performance with Paragon Alignment Tool

Partition alignment tool for ESXA leading designer and manufacturer of fantasy miniatures, Games Workshop, utilized Paragon Software Group’s Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) to increase its server and workstation performance, which was lagging due to misaligned partitions.

A publicly-quoted company with international direct sales operations, Games Workshop, employs both a modern VMware virtual server environment running Windows 2008 Datacenter and a legacy physical server environment running older Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 operating systems.

“We had a number of older servers that we migrated into our virtual environment and noticed that we did not get the performance that we expected,” said Jon Howell, North America IT Director for Games Workshop. “A little research revealed that since they were older OS versions, the partitions were not aligned correctly. The Paragon alignment tool cleaned things up nicely and increased the performance.”

In the recently issued IHS iSuppli report “Hard Disk Drive Pricing: Will it Reach Pre-Flood Level in the Near Future?”, prices for hard disk drives are expected to remain above pre-flood levels through 2014. Paragon Software’s partition alignment tool is perfect for extending the life of hardware still utilizing older operating systems; it also increases server performance for little investment in time or dollars.

Partition alignment tool ESX benefits include increased I/O performance of virtual machines by a factor of 2X to 3X; control, management, and alignment centrally and remotely of dozens of virtual drives belonging to different virtual machines (no need to manually install software on every virtual machine); and reduces the complexity and hardware requirements of alignment projects (no need for extra storage, because PAT performs in-place alignment – no migration required)

“As the use of virtual machines continues to expand, partition alignment is becoming more and more relevant to the IT departments that manage servers and workstations utilizing older versions of Microsoft operating systems,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “Paragon’s line of partition alignment software is specifically designed with a powerful feature set and easy-to-use interface to ensure maximum performance from older operating systems running on new, advanced format drives (AFDs).”

Windows XP Alive and Well as It Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

According to StatCounter, Windows XP maintains over 35 percent of the operating systems (OS) market share currently installed in the United States (over 50 percent worldwide).* MSNBC’s technology reporter, Suzanne Choney, highlighted this fact in her recent article, “Windows XP Turns 10, Still Thrives;” she surmises that XP will remain with us still for quite some time, given the economic environment — not to mention users’ high comfort level with XP, “Many who have stayed with XP just find it like a well-worn slipper, not ready to be thrown out and too comfy to give up.”

With Windows XP keeping a firm grip in the marketplace, technology designed to bridge the gap between the aging operating system and newer applications and appliances will continue to be relevant. Paragon Software offers an assortment of software tools and applications to help IT professionals keep their systems running XP in ship-shape condition while minimizing technology investment dollars.

Two of Paragon’s XP-compatibility technologies were spotlighted this week in Enterprise Storage Forum by Kenneth Corbin (author of ESF’s “Vendors to Watch” column) in “Paragon Software Targets OEMs, VARs with Niche Storage Tech”:

  • Partition alignment technology with PAT 3.0 and ESX (launched earlier this month) ensures partitions are aligned on physical and virtual machines, increasing performance and longevity
  • Universal File System Drivers, help differing platforms communicate properly

New Product Spotlight: Align Your Drives on a Virtual Network with Paragon’s new Partition Alignment Tool

As newer 4K Advanced Format hard disk drives become more prevalent in the virtual environment, partition alignment issues continue to increase in frequency (especially, with machines running Microsoft XP and Server 2003) — and are now permeating the virtual environment. The problem of partition misalignment is that it causes slow write times and inefficient disk operations because the physical and the logical sectors are not aligned. The misalignment causes redundant read/write operations, thus putting unnecessary strain on the hardware. The Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) ESX version follows on our partition alignment software technology in PAT 3.0, launched a few months ago for consumer products.

PAT ESX was developed to facilitate remote partition alignment of virtual systems. PAT ESX requires minimal virtual disk space (only 3 – 4MB per disk) to perform partition alignment with no need for additional space on the system for snapshots or copies of the processed volume. Should an unexpected interruption occur, the alignment operation can be continued without loss of data or need for restoration.

With the growing trend in resource consolidation through virtualization, we are seeing significant increases in the number of virtual servers and workstations. Due to the transition of the storage standard from 512B to 4K sectors, the appearance of partition misalignment and performance issues in these systems are increasing. Our customers’ need to resolve these issues is what drove the development of PAT ESX!

The partition alignment software provides easy and comprehensive management for virtual disk alignment operations. Installed on an administrator’s machine within the ESX environment, PAT ESX enables remote access to all virtual disks to check their state and perform alignments in an unattended mode. PAT ESX allows an administrator to browse data stores, select target virtual machines, and then connect to virtual disks to determine whether partition alignment is required. PAT then recommends alignment options if needed.

The Partition Alignment Tool Benefits include an increase virtual machine operations’ performance up to 300 percent, External control, management and alignment of dozens of virtual drives located on different virtual servers (no need to install on every virtual machine); and a decrease hardware costs by eliminating the need to have storage dedicated for migration functions.
